I remember Mayer describing feeling "amphibious" when playing guitar.something as a guitar player to aspire feeling like it's a line I keep in mind when learning new techniques. When you get rid of the butterflies and nervousness, that's when the real progress and consistency kicks in all the better if built upon some solid understanding of the fretboard (scales, modes, chord theory). All the bedroom wood-shedding in the world won't improve you the way performing in a loud, distracting (and often drunken) environment. I don't think anyone who has ever performed live extensively will not tell you how much the live experience improves you in the long run.

I believe he moved to Atlanta and performed live extensively, performing his initial song catalog. I remember reading that he chose to leave studying music in school because he personally felt he learned what he needed to get out of it and the next step was to perform live. A long time music fan, I got into Mayer's first album at the behest of my much younger sister, and I immediately recognized his skill as a guitar player.
